If it's time to put your little one into daycare, you may have already heard a lot about a special type of daycare centers called "Montessori" learning centers. What makes a Montessori daycare different from any other daycare center? The primacy focus of the Montessori philosophy is that of self-directed and hands-on learning--something that appeals to many parents (and little ones!). If you're considering the option to put your baby or toddler into Montessori daycare, there are a few questions worth asking that can guide you towards the right choice.

Is Your Staff Certified?

First and foremost, make sure that any daycare facility that is marketing itself as being "Montessori-style" actually has staff that is certified by the American Montessori Society (AMS). This will ensure that the staff and teachers who will be working with your child on a daily basis are actually trained on the principles of Montessori learning and have gone through several hundred hours of training and service hours to obtain that certification.

How Do You Handle Discipline?

In Montessori-style daycare, you should expect a very clear policy when it comes to discipline. Specifically, Montessori daycares should focus on positive discipline rather than shaming or scolding. Don't hesitate to ask for an example of a situation where a toddler may need to be disciplined and how the staff would handle it specifically.

Do You Offer a Pre-K or Kindergarten Program?

Your child may be in daycare for a few years, but there will likely come a time when you need to think about transitioning into a pre-K or kindergarten program. You can enjoy an easier transition if you choose a Montessori daycare that also has pre-K, kindergarten, or other programs available. You may even be able to "skip" any waitlists for these programs if you're already in the affiliated daycare.

Can I Come in to Observe?

Any reputable daycare should be happy to allow parents and their children to stop in for an "observation" period before committing to the program. Take advantage of this opportunity, as it can really help you see the Montessori philosophy at work and let you get a better feel for whether the daycare is a good fit for your little one.

Deciding on daycare can be stressful, but by asking the right questions, you can have your child enrolled in wonderful Montessori daycare in no time. Visit daycare centers near you to learn more.
